‘Do for others’ this Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Martin Luther King, Jr. was a minister, an activist, and an American civil rights leader who dedicated his life to ending racial inequality for all. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, or MLK Day, was legislated as a federal holiday in 1963. His life and legacy are celebrated annually on the third Monday in January. This day, his day, is the only federal holiday designated by Congress as a national day of service.
MLK Day 2023 takes place on Monday, January 16, one day after his birthday. Regarded as a ‘day on, not a day off,’ this holiday is guided by one of his most famous quotes, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is ‘What are you doing for others?”
For our Neutin Members looking to recognize MLK Day by answering this question by doing for others, here are four ways to give back with your Neutin rewards.
DONATE
Consider donating your time or resources to empowering your community. You can do this by delivering food to a local food pantry or donating books for children or families at your local library or nonprofit bookstore. Got clothes in your closet you haven’t worn in forever? Donate those clothes to a local shelter or thrift store. Use your Neutin rewards to purchase books to donate to children or families in your area. Purchases in these categories can help you donate this MLK Day: SERVICES, SHOP ONLINE, SHOP LOCALLY, HEALTH & BEAUTY, HOME & GARDEN
VOLUNTEER
Since the kids will have the day off, get the whole family involved. Consider helping out at a local homeless shelter. Spend the day volunteering at an animal shelter, participating in a community clean-up event, or working at a food bank or soup kitchen. Use your Neutin rewards to give toys to a homeless dog or cat or to get supplies for your community clean-up, like rakes, gloves, and more. LEARN
A great way to commemorate MLK Day is by learning about the man behind the day and the civil rights movement. Dr. King once said, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” So, use your Neutin rewards to purchase books about Dr. King and educate yourself beyond this day on topics to expand your thinking and strengthen your mind.
