What is PECO Energy?

PECO is an energy utility company operating in southeastern Pennsylvania. It’s the electricity utility for Philadelphia and the surrounding counties and the gas utility for the Philadelphia suburbs. That means it’s your default energy supplier if you live in these areas. However, both markets have been deregulated, giving consumers the opportunity to buy energy from alternative retail suppliers.

PECO was founded as the Philadelphia Electricity Company in 1881 and remains headquartered in the city.

What services does PECO offer?

PECO generates, transmits and distributes electricity and natural gas to residential and business customers. It’s the largest combination utility in Pennsylvania.

It also offers energy assessments to residential customers, to help them identify ways they can boost their home’s energy efficiency. It gives rebates and discounts on your energy bills if you choose energy-efficient appliances and ditch old ones.

Where does PECO operate?

PECO provides electricity services to more than 1.6 million customers in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery Counties and a southeastern corner of York County.
It provides natural gas services more than 500,000 customers in the suburbs of Philadelphia (but not the city itself), including parts of Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery Counties and a small part of eastern Lancaster County.
