What is WGL?

WGL is a diversified energy company, supplying natural gas, electricity, and renewable power. Its division, Washington Gas, is the public gas utility company in Washington D.C. and the surrounding areas of Maryland and Virginia, serving more than one million customers.

Washington Gas and WGL’s history is storied: its predecessor lit the first gas lamps on the ground of the U.S. Capitol Building in 1848 and quickly grew to power homes, street lights, and movie cinemas in the nation’s capital. You can see traces of the company’s heritage in the antique gas and electric street lamps which still line the roads in Georgetown and Foggy Bottom.

WGL isn’t mired in the fog of the past though. The company has pushed into renewable power, supplying wind and solar power to clients including the U.S. Army, the DC Metro, the Department of Homeland Security, and the National Geographic Society.
